Buck and Doe Run Watershed Partnership

Our Purpose:

The purpose of the Buck and Doe Run Watershed Partnership is to engage municipalities and other stakeholders to preserve and enhance the Buck and Doe Run Watershed as a significant regional asset. The Partnership will provide watershed education and information, implement stream restoration and protection projects, encourage municipal initiatives, and support other partner efforts to improve the environmental quality of the watershed, its streams, and communities. Buck & Doe Run:

Buck Run begins in West Caln and Sadsbury Townships while the headwaters of Doe Run begin in Highland, Londonderry, and West Fallowfield Townships. Buck & Doe Run intersect to form a single stream just before they reach the west branch of the Brandywine Creek. The watershed encompasses 11 municipalities, 49 square miles of land, and 80 miles of stream.

Watershed Stewardship Efforts Move Forward

The Buck and Doe Run Watershed includes all of the land area that drains to the streams known as Buck Run and Doe Run (see map on page 2). The Watershed encompasses 49 square miles of land area, 80 miles of streams, and 4,765 property parcels that are located within portions of 11 municipalities in west-central Chester County. Without care, every activity that occurs on each parcel of property within this Watershed area can pollute these streams and their underlying ground water aquifers and increase flooding related problems.

The Buck and Doe Run Watershed Partnership is moving forward with several efforts to inform and engage land owners in taking steps on their individual properties that will protect and enhance the natural resources of this bucolic Watershed area.

The Partnership is pursuing signage to install at certain bridges that span Buck Run and Doe Run to raise the awareness of community residents and travelers to the presence of this necklace of unique streams. Pilot projects are being identified to showcase good examples of easy-to-do techniques by land-owners and businesses that can improve the water quality of the streams of the Watershed.

Distribution of newsletter updates and the future establishment of a dedicated web page are underway to provide information to the community residents of the importance of “good outdoor housekeeping” to keep their yards and properties from becoming sources of pollutants that would eventually find their way to the streams and aquifers of the Buck and Doe Run Watershed.

But the most important effort underway by the Partnership is focused on extending the partial “ribbons” of woody vegetation that occur along some portions of the stream side areas of Buck Run and Doe Run to create a continuous network of vegetated stream-side buffers in areas that provide the greatest opportunities and benefits.

The Buck and Doe Run Watershed Partnership – Includes “You”!

The map below illustrates the area that comprises the Buck and Doe Run Watershed and lists the municipal and organizational Partners. But, the most important “Partner” is YOU – the residents and land owners within the Watershed. It’s your land and your community. Help us preserve the unique character of the Buck and Doe Run Watershed and community by taking inventory of your vegetation management, waste disposal and chemical use practices. Let us know if we can help you improve these practices. And let us know if you have a good example of “gold standard” practices that we can showcase to others. Together we can make a difference!!
